Talent Phiri, a 35-year-old Gwanda magistrate, has been arraigned before the Bulawayo Magistrates’ Court for abuse of duty as a public officer.

Phiri is accused of soliciting a USD$3,000 bribe from a divorced man to influence a case in his favor.

“I will help you with your case, but you need to pay me USD$3,000,” Phiri allegedly told the man, promising to use his connections with the President’s office, National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, and the Zimbabwe Republic Police to ensure his favor.

After negotiations, Phiri agreed to reduce the amount to USD$2,500, instructing the man to bring the money to his residence. However, before the transaction could take place, authorities arrived, and Phiri was arrested.

The prosecution presented evidence of recorded phone conversations between Phiri and the man, revealing the magistrate’s alleged corruption. Phiri appeared in court for trial, facing charges under Section 174 of the Criminal Law for abuse of duty as a public officer.
