President Samia Suluhu Hassan has strongly denounced the killing of Mohamed Ali Kibao, a senior member of the opposition party Chadema, who was kidnapped, beaten, and doused with acid.
“I have ordered the investigation agencies to bring me detailed information about this terrible incident and others like this as soon as possible,” she said.
“Our country is a democracy, and every citizen has the right to live.”
Kibao, 69, was forced off a bus by suspected security agents and found dead with severe injuries and acid burns. Chadema chairman Freeman Mbowe described the incident as “brutal acts” and called for an independent investigation.
The US Embassy in Tanzania also condemned the killing, urging an “independent, transparent, and prompt investigation.” Mbowe warned that “the lives of Chadema leaders are currently at risk” and demanded action from the government.
The murder has sparked widespread condemnation, with many fearing a return to repressive rule. Human Rights Watch has expressed concern over the increase in arrests of opposition activists ahead of the 2025 presidential elections. “Murder and disappearances…should have no place in a democracy,” the US Embassy stated.
