Despite his impressive achievements, some football fans have called for Cristiano Ronaldo to retire from international football, citing his emotional performances and perceived distraction to Portugal’s success.
However, Ronaldo’s dedication and continued contributions to the team suggest he still has a vital role to play.
Ronaldo recently celebrated scoring his 900th career goal, including 131 goals in 213 international appearances, both records expected to stand the test of time. Manager Roberto Martinez praised Ronaldo’s commitment, saying,
“He scores because of his dedication to the national team, the work in training that goes unseen, and his ability to inspire younger players.”
England captain Harry Kane referred to Ronaldo as the “benchmark” for elite players, and his leadership in international football is undeniable. Having participated in five European Championships and four World Cups, Ronaldo may aim for another shot at both in 2026.
While age has affected his performance, Ronaldo’s influence on the national team remains significant. Martinez emphasized,
“His dedication is an asset.”
The debate over the greatest footballer of all time may be subjective, but finding a player more committed to excellence and national representation than Ronaldo seems unlikely.
As Ronaldo prepares to make his 214th appearance against Scotland, his continued success and dedication to the sport suggest he still has much to offer.
