A Nigerian woman is said to have given birth to eleven babies in the state of Port Novo, Benin on two separate days.
Porto-Novo is located on a lagoon, an inlet of the Gulf of Guinea, in the southeastern corner of Benin, close to the country’s border to Nigeria.
Yahaya Nafiu explained that his wife delivered the first set of six babies on August 7, while the another were delivered seven days later, on August 14, 2024.
Instead of being elated or happy, Nafiu is struggling under immense pressure as he faces an uphill struggle of taking care of the huge family.
“I’m overwhelmed and need help,” said Nafiu, whose 54-year-old wife delivered 11 babies in 7 days.
The first set of six babies arrived on August 7, followed by five more on August 14, 2024.
“It’s a miracle, but also a huge challenge,” Nafiu said.
Nafiu explained this while sending home a passionate appeal for financial assistance from well-meaning Nigerians.
The decuplets, consisting of eight males and three females, were delivered by a birth attendant. Unfortunately, two girls didn’t survive.
“The remaining nine babies are healthy, but caring for them and their mother is a significant financial burden,” Nafiu said.
“A few days after the delivery of the first set of children, my wife said she felt strange movements in her stomach. After a scan was carried out at the hospital, the doctor revealed that she was carrying another set of children, which led them to contact the initial birth attendant, and the next set of five babies was delivered,” the 56-year-old husband said.
He attributed the unusual pregnancy to evil spiritual influence, saying doctors were unable to perform a Caesarian operation due to uncertainty about the pregnancy position.
Nafiu, a father of many, appealed for financial assistance from well-meaning Nigerians. “We need help to care for these children and their mother.”
His wife carried the pregnancy for three years before delivery, and both have children from previous relationships.
“This is a rare and exceptional case, and we need support to ensure the health and well-being of the mother and children,” Nafiu said.
