Zimbabwean-born Councillor Mara Makunura has made history by becoming the first African Mayor of Rushmoor Borough Council in the UK. She was elected to lead the council from this year to next year, making her the first female and first black African to hold the position.
“I am honored to serve as the Mayor of Rushmoor and pledge to champion diversity and promote equal opportunity for all,” Cllr Makunura said.
“Our leadership must reflect the diverse demographics of our community, inspiring our youth, especially young girls, to strive for greatness without limitations.”
Cllr Makunura’s journey began in Chinhoyi, Zimbabwe, where she attended Chikonohono Primary School and Nemakonde Secondary School. She relocated to the UK in 1997 to join her husband and made history in 2018 by becoming the first person of African descent to be elected as a councillor in Rushmoor, Hampshire.
As Mayor, Cllr Makunura aims to “shatter the glass ceiling and pave the way for a more inclusive and representative leadership that truly represents the beautiful tapestry of our community.”
Her election is a significant milestone, reflecting the growing diversity of UK politics. Cllr Makunura’s leadership will undoubtedly inspire others to pursue careers in public service, breaking down barriers and promoting equality.
Makunura follows after Rushing Sunak who was elected Conservative Party leader on Diwali day in October 2022, when he entered 10 Downing Street as the youngest British Prime Minister in 210 years and the country’s very first non-white leader.
Even after Sunak lost in United Kingdom’s general elections he holds a place in the history books as Britain’s first Prime Minister of Indian heritage is secure.
