Some Motswana nationals in collaboration with their Zimbabwean counterparts decided to take the law into their hands as they hunted down cattle rusttlers who have been helping themselves of their livestock.
On the 1st of April, 34 villagers from Guyu with the assistance of 11 Botswana nationals decided to go door to door around Guyu village homesteads sniffing out alleged donkey thieves.
The group had been supplied with names of the alleged thieves thus the reason for taking the law unto their hands.
Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the National Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson, confirmed that a gang was moving around in two vehicles in John West Village, Tuli, Matabeleland South.
The gang effected a citizens’ arrest on Godwill Ndlovu and Justice Ncube for alleged stocktheft after recovering 11 donkeys penned at both men’s homesteads.
After handcuffing the two they drove them to five other homesteads of suspected donkey thieves where they broke window panes and doors before destroying property worth thousands in Rand currency.
“…they broke window panes and doors on several homesteads before demolishing ZAR 25 400 worth of property which include refrigeratorrs, sofas, cupboards, beds and a kitchen unit. In the process cash amounting to ZAR 9 900 and a Mobicell cellphone were reportedly stolen…” Said Asst. Commissioner Nyathi.
A clash with some locals at John West village ensued and the villagers repossessed the recovered donkeys forcing the donkey search party retreated. However, they took with them Godwill Ndlovu and Justice Ncube, whom they assaulted with sjamboks and wooden sticks at Mashaba Business Centre, Guyu which resulted in the death of Justice Ncube.
Police investigations are currently underway for murder, kidnapping, malicious damage to property, assault, stocktheft, unlawful entry into premises and theft.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges the public to report all criminal cases to the police and avoid taking the law into their own hands if wronged by another person.
