A mentally challenged suspect, Trust Sithole Chivhunze, has been arrested by police in Chipinge for allegedly killing a 70-year-old grandmother, Sophia Sithole, and her 4-year-old granddaughter.
According to a police statement, the incident occurred on August 18, 2024, at Manyanya Village, Mutema.
“The victims were found dead after a hut they were in was set on fire. Sophia Sithole was burnt beyond recognition, while her granddaughter was found with a fractured skull,” the statement read.
Police spokesperson: “We are investigating a case of murder and arson. The suspect, Trust Sithole Chivhunze, is believed to be mentally challenged and is currently in custody.”
A village neighbor said,
“We are shocked and saddened by this tragic incident. The grandmother and her granddaughter were well-known and loved in our community.”
Police are still investigating the motive behind the killings and the fire. The suspect’s mental health will also be evaluated as part of the investigation.
A Chipinge Police Officerin an interview said
: “We urge anyone with information about this case to come forward and assist us in our investigation.”
