Lukas Slavik, a Czech tourist, was granted $500 bail by High Court Judge Sunsley Zisengwe in Masvingo today, after being remanded in custody for three weeks. Slavik was arrested for allegedly spreading falsehoods with the intention to incite the public.
Justice Zisengwe ordered Slavik to:
- Deposit $500 with the Clerk of Court
- Reside at the Consulate of the Czech Republic in Harare until the matter is finalized
- Report at ZRP Highlands every Friday between 6am and 6pm until the matter is finalized
- Surrender his passport
- Not interfere with State witnesses
Slavik’s lawyer, Knowledge Mabvuure, said, “We are relieved that bail has been granted. We believe that the charges against Mr. Slavik are unfounded and we will vigorously defend him in court.”
Czech Deputy Ambassador Michael Novak had earlier given a surety that the Embassy would accommodate Slavik and ensure he wouldn’t skip the country if granted bail.
Slavik was arrested for recording a video stating that Masvingo faced a serious water and electricity crisis, which led to charges under Section 31(a) 1 of publishing false statements with intention to incite the public.
