Tuesday August 20th, marked World Mosquito Day, a global awareness campaign to highlight the dangers of mosquito-borne diseases and promote efforts to prevent and control them.
Zim GBC News spoke to Dr. Norvic, a leading expert in tropical diseases who emphasized the importance of this day, saying,
“World Mosquito Day is a reminder that we must continue to fight against mosquito-borne diseases.”
Dr. Norvic encouraged unity in the fight against these diseases, stating, “By working together, we can reduce the burden of these diseases and save lives.”
Mosquitoes spread diseases like malaria, dengue fever, Zika virus, and yellow fever, causing over one million deaths worldwide each year.
Despite progress made in controlling mosquito population, these diseases remain a significant public health hazards.
To combat this, health experts recommend simple measures like:
- Using insecticide-treated bed nets
- Wearing protective clothing
- Eliminating standing water around homes
- Applying insect repellents
Researchers are also working on innovative solutions like genetic modification and mosquito-repelling technologies. By taking action, we can reduce the burden of mosquito-borne diseases and save lives.
