Women’s football in Zimbabwe is in sorry state, such that some of the big football teams in the country do not have women’s teams.
Bulawayo side Highlanders Football Club is planning to revive their women’s football team, Highlanders Royals FC.
The newly appointed Highlanders FC Chief Executive Officer, Ronald Moyo who assumed his office duties on the
1st of April 2022 spoke on these developments, of reviving the women’s team, Highlanders Royals Football Club.
In an interview with Zim GBC News Moyo said that trials will begin on the 5th of April 2022.
“We are conducting trials at the clubhouse from Tuesday to Saturday” said Moyo.
The club is calling for all ladies who are interested in playing professional football.
“The trials will be conducted by our junior coaches at Highlanders Football Club” Moyo added.
The new claims CEO to have plans to lure more fans into the stadium.
The Premier Soccer League (PSL) gave the green light for vaccinated fans into the stadia to watch live soccer matches, allowing only 30% capacity in line with World Health Organization COVID-19 regulations.
But turn out of fans into the stadium is very low.
It is even below half of the expected number of spectators, what could be the problem?
Barbourfields Stadium has a capacity of about 25,000 spectators and the PSL allowed a maximum of 8 000 vaccinated spectators into the stadium but surprisingly approximately 2000 people are turning up for matches.
Emagumeni was characterized by huge crowds, vuvuzela’s and no parking spaces during Highlanders’ matches but it’s a different story now.
Ronald Moyo spoke on strategizing and luring spectators into the stadium.
He said ” First thing the team should perform in order to lure fans , then as local football clubs we need to sit down and strategise on how we can market our product (football) so that we can get more fans into the stadium.”
“We might start bringing other entertainment activities to entertain our fans before the match,on halftime and after the match” added Moyo.
It will seem Moyo does not possess so many plans for the Bulawayo giants Highlanders Football Club, he could not unpack the strategies and plans during the interview.
