Two armed robbers, Aleck Moyo (37) and Bongani Tshuma (41), were shot dead on Sunday in a shootout with police detectives in Bulawayo.
The shootout took place at a bushy area near Mpilo Central Hospital, where there suspects were believed to be holed up.
“The suspects began to fire at the detectives, leading to a shootout. They were overpowered, and we recovered a Cannic pistol and an Astra Revolver,” said National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
The suspects, who were wanted for five armed robbery cases, sustained gunshot wounds and died upon admission to United Bulawayo Group of Hospitals.
Nyathi said the suspects were linked to five armed robbery cases, which occurred between March 6 and July 29 this year, including a case of robbery which occurred on May 7 at Phatalika Village, Nyangazonke Sunyetsen, where household goods, a Honda CVR vehicle registration number AEA 9034 and Toyota Surf vehicle registration number ABC 6251 were stolen.
“Further, the suspects were wanted on a case of robbery which occurred on July 29, 2024 at a bushy area in Old Nkulumane 12, Bulawayo, where a Honda Fit vehicle registration number ADX 7925 and three cellphones were stolen,” the police boss said.
Nyathi emphasized that the police are intensifying their fight against armed robbery, saying,
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that there is no going back in the fight against armed robbery cases in the country. Our crack teams are alert and will ensure that the law takes its course without fear or favor.”
