As was reported by this publication before, Bulawayo cemeteries have again come under the spotlight.

Almost all the cemeteries are in a state of disrepair.

Winos Dube, chairperson of the Bulawayo Residents Association (BURA), has expressed deep concern over the deplorable condition of cemeteries in the city, calling for urgent attention from the Local Authority.

“The state of our cemeteries is a reflection of our society’s values and respect for the dead,” Dube said in an interview.

“Graves are caving in, tombstones are being stolen, and perimeter fences have been vandalized. It’s a sad state of affairs.”

Dube emphasized the need for the City Council to take responsibility for maintaining the cemeteries, including installing proper fencing and providing security to prevent theft and vandalism.

“The council should take pride in maintaining these sacred spaces,” he said.

“We need to show respect for the deceased and their families. It’s not just about maintaining infrastructure, but also about preserving our cultural heritage.”

The disrespect of the cemeteries goes beyond vandalism, muggings have taken place several times with reports made to the police. Pathways have been opened as people find their way through the cemeteries.

The worst is when scholars sit or play around the graveyard on their way to or from school.

The neglect of the cemeteries is evident in the overgrown grass and crumbling headstones. Even the provincial heroes’ acre in Nkulumane has not been spared, with signs of vandalism and disrepair.

Dube appealed to residents to refrain from vandalizing the cemeteries and to show respect for the dead. “Let us take pride in our city and our heritage,” he said. “We owe it to ourselves, our ancestors, and future generations to maintain these sacred spaces with dignity and respect.”

The Bulawayo City Council has promised to address the issue, with plans to renovate and secure the cemeteries. However, residents are calling for swift action to restore the cemeteries to their former glory.
