A shocking incident occurred at an anti-drug campaign and tournament in Kwekwe, Zimbabwe, when a teenage girl was caught taking drugs.
The event, aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse, was marred by the girl’s actions.
“It was a big anti-climax for the event,” said Kwekwe Mayor, Albert Zinhanga.
“Our theme is ‘no to drugs,’ but unfortunately, she was saying ‘yes’ to drugs.”
The girl, who cannot be named for ethical reasons, was found intoxicated and lying on the ground after her friends fled the scene.
An usher who spoke to this reporter said,
“She was already high and couldn’t run away like her friends did.”
The Mayor confirmed that the girl was taken home to her parents and left in safe hands. He also revealed that she is a school drop-out.
The incident highlights the severity of the drug abuse situation in Zimbabwe, where even events aimed at preventing drug use can be affected by the problem.
“It’s a wake-up call for us to intensify our efforts in fighting drug abuse,” said Mayor Zinhanga.
“We need to do more to protect our youth from the dangers of drugs.”
This publication has always followed these anti-drug campaigns from a far off distance. Different reporters from Zim GBC News have always witnessed high or intoxicated youths during campaigns.
Several reports have been lodged with the police of the suppliers but seemingly nothing changes. Suppliers of drugs and sale of alcohol still prevails to under age youths.
Another root cause of drugs and Substance abuse is redundancy. Many youths are unemployed and spend most of their time loitering the streets.
Youths clubs are non functional and are now rented to churches. The youths ministries or its ministers seem to be lost as to what they must do to keep the youths of Zimbabwe occupied.
As long as the supply chain remains porous, the war against drugs will take a very long time to be won.
