Mpumalanga police have apprehended 95 Libyan nationals at a suspected military training camp in Masoyi, outside White River. The arrest follows concerns raised by the Home Affairs Department regarding a group of foreign nationals who may have misrepresented themselves when applying for visas to enter the country.
According to Mpumalanga Police spokesperson Donald Mdluli, “There are about 95 foreign nationals who are here. For now, they are apprehended. We believe they could have contravened some of the regulations in terms of immigration.”
The group, which arrived in April, claimed to be training as security personnel. However, police suspect they have been engaging in military training. Mdluli notes, “This place, according to PSiRA (Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority), is designated for security training, but now, as you could see, it is a military base according to our understanding. From our understanding, it is a military base, but that is still going to be checked.”
The investigation is ongoing, and the police are working to determine the extent of the group’s activities and any potential violations of immigration regulations.
