Legendary actress Leleti Khumalo is set to make a comeback on the small screen, joining the cast of SABC’s long-running soapie Muvhango for its 26th season.
“I’m making a comeback on the SABC because that’s where I started my career on the small screen,” Khumalo said in an interview. “And when I received the call, I thought, ‘why not return to where it all began?'”
Khumalo, known for her iconic performance in Sarafina!, expressed enthusiasm about rejoining the network where she first launched her career on Generations. “It’s like finding a home that’s fully furnished and warm, and you just need to add your personal touch,” she said.
The veteran actress is thrilled to play a character unlike any she has played before, but also nervous. “I’m playing a character that has not been played by Leleti before, which is thrilling. I’m both excited and nervous… It’s a beautiful storyline with twists and turns.”
Khumalo’s return comes amidst changes in the South African TV industry, with several long-running shows ending. However, she sees no issue with shows maintaining extended runs, citing international series like Days of Our Lives. “As actors, we need work, and it’s sad when producers decide to end shows. There’s nothing fundamentally wrong with long-format shows.”
Muvhango’s 26th season, featuring Khumalo, premieres on August 5th, 2024, on SABC.
