It was a bowl of porridge that spelt the beginning of the end for Honest Nkomo’s marriage, but it was a hammer that tragically sealed his wife’s fate.

The shocking events unfolded at Ntambama Village under Chief Masendu in Madlambuzi, Plumtree have marred a tale of unchecked rage and the horrifying consequences of marital discord.

The Magistrates Court, situate at the small border town, south of Bulawayo, heard the harrowing details of the fatal incident of how a husband allegedly struck his wife twice with a hammer after suspecting her of dabbling in witchcraft and trying to “bewitch” his porridge.

The aftermath of Honest Nkomo (34)’s violent outburst saw him stand before the Plumtree Magistrates’ Court, accused of murdering his wife.

According to state papers, the fatal altercation began when Nkomo returned home on the fateful evening of July 17, 2024 to find his wife allegedly sprinkling something he suspected to be a charm into his porridge.

The clash intensified when Nkomo, convinced that his wife was attempting to bewitch him, demanded that she eat the porridge herself. She, however, refused to consume the suspicious porridge or provide any explanation for her actions.

This led to a physical struggle, which culminated in Nkomo allegedly striking his wife on the head with a pick, causing her to collapse to the ground.

He went on to strike her for the second time using a hammer on the head, leaving the weapon embedded in her skull.

When she did not get up, he removed the hammer from her head, where it had lodged and placed it on the ground.

The brutal attack left the woman dead on the scene.

Local authorities were promptly alerted of the horrific incident, resulting in the arrest of Nkomo on charges of murder.

He was remanded in custody to the 1st of August, where he awaits his fate at the hands of the Zimbabwean justice system.

“The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe encourages members of the public to desist from violence and resolve their disputes amicably or seek third party mediation.”
