The MDC-T leader Thokozani Khupe has endorsed the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) led by Nelson Chamisa.
Khupe addressed a press conference wearing a yellow CCC t-shirt, with Chamisa’s picture.
MDC-T faction leader Khupe was quoted at the presser saying she will be doing door to door campaigns to encourage citizens to vote for opposition party CCC’s candidates in the by-elections on the 26th of March.
This she said will “build a strong foundation for resounding victory in 2023.”
The rumours of Khupe joining CCC began early in February, and they have been confirmed.
Soon after the existence of the Citizens Coalition for Change was announced, a picture consisting of Khupe, Welshman Ncube (CCC Vice President) and Abednico Ncube circulated on social media. It was then alleged that a “secret meeting” between Nelson Chamisa and the trio had agreed on a coalition pact deal.
There after Chamisa was quoted saying:
“We will work with MDC-T, APA and all other parties that want to walk this journey of bringing Zimbabweans together.
“We need to settle down our differences with everyone in the opposition to create a powerful coalition that will work together to defeat Mnangagwa in 2023,” said Chamisa.
The decision to work with other parties resulted from the view that CCC had very little support in Matabeleland and thus Welshman Ncube suggested that the evaluation must inform the CCC’s strategic options ahead of the 2023 elections which must include taking everyone on board.
This was followed by Khupe admitting to have made mistakes and raised the need to settle differences in order to have a better chance against Mnangagwa in 2023.
When this came out, some CCC supporters have vehemently voiced their concerns in working with Khupe.
Even one other CCC’s Champions for Change leader, Thabitha Khumalo had reservations on Khupe joining CCC.
Khumalo said that Khupe should join the yellow movement as an ordinary member.
Alex Magaisa the former chief of staff in the office of former late Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai tweeted:
“Politicians must work hard to win the hearts and minds of people who support their rivals instead of courting the rivals hoping for easy pickings. They will never be your people. Marriages of convenience between political elites create fiefdoms and only end in heartbreak and tears.”
Renowned journalist Hopewell Chin’ono agreed with him and said;
“The idea that Thokozani Khupe is the main ingredient in Matabeleland for the opposition to win is an insult to people of that region. It is stockholder politics that assumes that there are no young people in Matabeleland capable of being leaders and attracting votes!”
One supporter, Dumisani Dube assumed CCC would lose supporters if they had to join hands with Khupe.
Now, Chin’ono tweets:
“Zimbabwe’s main opposition leader Nelson Chamisa made it clear that anyone can join or support the main opposition CCC, BUT the leaders will be chosen by the Citizens. Even Mnangagwa can join too but not to lead. So there is nothing to worry about at all!”
