Women have been challenged to fully participate in the technology industry so as to counter the stereotypes which have been favoring their counterparts.
The sentiments were highlighted by the Texpo Coordinator Addi Mavengere in an exclusive interview with Zim GBC News who stated that their organization have been making strides in trying to promote gender equality and women empowerment through technology.
“We don’t believe in stereotypes which state that technology is for men, we are trying by all means to give equal opportunities to women as they are availed to men, as you can see here women are also exposed to technology equipment such as soldering irons, we strongly believe that women are also equally technologically competent like their male counterparts.” Mavengere said
Texpo last week held a hackathon tournament in the City where students from Bulawayo aged between15-22 rubbed shoulders in a bid to construct solutions through coding and various computer solutions in a bid to solve traffic control challenges and gas safety.
Mavengere also told this reporter that their main objective was to give learners and educators the opportunity to exchange experiences so as to empower them with problem solving solutions through technology since the world is totally embracing technology. He also stated that to show their commitment towards women empowerment they initiated their program at Girls College in Bulawayo which is an all girls High School in November last year.
The Harare based organization Coordinator also hinted on the organisation’s goals to expand the initiative to grassroots levels so as to breed technology seasoned generations in the country.
