A Zimbabwean man who was arrested for stealing a phone left a Botswana court in stitches after he claimed that he was possessed by demons when he committed the crime.
Prince Ndebele, 24, who entered and was living in the neighboring country illegally made a shocking claim about being possessed by evil spirits when he committed the crime in Botswana’s second Capital Francistown Magistrate’s Courts.
The Zimbabwean born, Prince Ndebele was charged of theft with his partner Solwa Ndodanda Chuma, 26.
Both Prince and Solwa claimed that they stole the cellphone in order to raise money so they could return to Zimbabwe to see their father who is very sick.
“I woke up early in the morning and I was possessed by the demons to snatch someone’s phone. I was looking for money to return to Zimbabwe to see my father,” said Prince Ndebele.
Promising to never break the law again, Chuma also told the court that he was possessed by the evil spirits.
The two were accused of stealing a Huawei Y5 phone from Gokwateng Thabo Thatoyaone with a value of P1 900.
The matter was immediately reported to the police which led to the arrest of the two Zimbabweans.
Even though their case did not take long time due to their confession, Prince and Solwa judgement was reserved and were remanded in custody to May 18 as the police continue with the investigations.
The two were also charged with being in Botswana illegally and will wait for a full month before being deported back to Zimbabwe after serving for their crime.
