The Bulawayo Publicity Association Director Bruce McDonald has joined the bandwagon that is calling on all city stakeholders to arrest the current state of Bulawayo Central Business streets.
Speaking to Zim GBC News, McDonald said that tourists who come to the city happen to complain about the cleanliness of the city.
“Tourists from other countries do complain about the cleanliness of Bulawayo as some of these people come from as far as Namibia and Australia.”
McDonald suggested a few solutions that the Bulawayo Publicity Association has come up with to curb the problems of dirt that is currently afflicting the Central Business District.
“Education is our main focus which can make us successful in maintaining the cleanliness of the city. We have been planning to go to schools to teach students, especially high scholars on how they can maintain cleanliness,” McDonald said.
However, he said the schools curriculum have tendency to militate against their planned anti- littering school program,
“The problem is that the schedules in schools are a bit tight. Therefore, we’ve come up with a solution of going when they are free where we cannot disturb their lessons and sports time. To do all of these we need permission from relevant authorities.”
McDonald also told Zim GBC News that residents needs to be taught more on the relevance of refuse bins that are located almost in every street corner.
“The education sector can be used successfully in order to conscientious residents about the need for cleanliness. We have since come up with a program in which we intend to employ school activities like public speaking, drama and musical shows in order to spread anti-littering programs. We hope young people will then spread the gospel of cleanliness to their parents.”
However, he said the current school curriculum may not accommodate the Bulawayo Publicity Association and it’s plan. This he alluded to the connection within the schools system which is jammed with education curriculum and sporting activities.
“There is a day when I told someone to pick up the paper that he had dropped on the pavement and he even refused to do so,” he added.
The Director of the Bulawayo Publicity Association also said that there is a need to talk to the recycling companies so that they do not only remove the dirt that they can recycle, but everything to make our city clean.
The Bulawayo Publicity Association was established in 1932 to promote and publicise nationally, all aspects of the City of Bulawayo and surrounding districts in commerce and industry, tourism, sport, the arts, and culture. It provides a personal information service to enquirers and a point of first contact for visitors to the city.
