Kwekwe – Several pupils from Globe and Phoenix Primary School escapes death by a whisker when their classroom collapsed into an artisanal mine shaft that passed through their school.

The shaft, it is believed, was dug by artisanal miners, makorokoza.

In a video circulating on social media, the floor of the classroom block is seen collapsed into the shaft.

The Kwekwe District Development Coordinator, Mr. Fortune Mpungu has confirmed the incident saying the District Civil Protection Unit(CPU) was now on the ground.

He was quoted as having said,

“The Civil Protection Unit, (CPU), has received a report of a classroom block that collapsed. The CPU personnel is on the ground to establish the cause of the damage.”

It’s been been established that there have been illegal gold mining activities that have been taking place underneath the institution’s grounds.

Reports state that seven children from the school were injured in the melee but the extent of the injuries were not established.

As the country’s economy continues to melt, illegal means of survival have mushroomed all over the country leading to such near death experiences.
