The Zimbabwe Rugby Union has stepped up efforts to develop the game of rugby amongst women. It has initiated the formation of rugby clubs catering for women in almost every urban area.

Zim GBC News established this in an interview with the Southern Region Development officer with Zimbabwe Rugby, Reuben Kumpasa on the sidelines of a training session that the Union carried out with girls from a Private College based in Bulawayo.

This training session took place at the ceremonial home of rugby in Zimbabwe that is Hartsfield Stadium.

“It’s been a couple of years trying to push for the girl child since early 2003, Bulawayo has been lagging behind, however in recent years we have seen the numbers of the girls growing, as you have seen the girls I’m working with from a newly established private college based in Bulawayo, who have just been introduced to the game an indication of the development of the game.”Kumpasa said.

Kumpasa also pointed out the rugby amongst females is now being played out in almost every school and the next stage is to harness and divide the growing player base into clubs.

Meanwhile, rugby amongst women is now being played widely. The premier competition on the continent is the Rugby Africa Women’s Cup which was launched in 2019. The current Champions are South Africa who hosted the inaugural event. Some of the powerhouses on the continent are Kenya, Madagascar and Uganda.
