ZIMBABWE’S celebrity cyclist based in South Africa, Meli Ndlovu popularly known as ‘Meli The Cyclist’ has set his next challenge in motion which will bring back colonial- era memories for Africa as a whole.
Meli The Cyclist, born in Zimbabwe Matebeleland South Province (Matopo district, Kezi- Maphisa eKuthuleni village) started cycling in 2012 and made airwaves by riding his bicycle from Johannesburg to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.
“I have traveled on a bicycle from South Africa to Bulawayo at least four times and l have cherished, and enjoyed these historic rides.” Said Meli The Cyclist.
Now the 42 year old, aroused by Cecil John Rhodes ‘Cape To Cairo’ dream which would have seen Africa connected by Railway, wants to complete that vision by connecting the South and North with an overland trip (cycling).
“Come 2024, I will be escorted to Egypt where I will cycle 11 000 km for one month from Cape Town, South Africa to Cairo. I would want to become the first black Zimbabwean to travel across the African continent. This feat has to be possible because ‘m planning this cleanly with my manager,” he said.
According to Ndlovu, cycling across Africa comes with many challenges that include war zones, bad roads, bad weather (wind and rain) and the terrains.
“Its difficult to cycle opposing wind because it will be hard to break facing the wind and its also dangerous when its raining. The road will be slippery and not safe for on- coming traffic, but l have never crashed. Why? Because safety comes first. Concentration is needed, you have to change gears and exercise breaking constantly.” Said Ndlovu in an interview with Zim GBC News.
Meli The Cyclist is a member of a cycling club based in Tembisa, Johannesburg that encourages young people to take up the sport/ activity of riding bicycles. The South African based Zimbabwean activist also revealed he will be in the city of Bulawayo this April.
