Farmers for Economic Development (Farmers4ED) National Chairperson Tapiwa Chitate has bemoaned the effects of the outbreak of this highly pathogenic virusthat originates from birds on the local poultry industry.

“Since the outbreak of avian influenza in Europe 2022, as farmers we have been adversely affected given that poultry production is the primary means of livelihoods for our people in both rural and urban set ups. In line with rural development 8.0 through initiatives put in place by the Second Republic under the Leadership of HE Cde Ed Mnangagwa, poultry production is one of the economic enablers as a sine – quanan for livelihood and economic empowerment is concerned”, said Chitate.

This bird flue which is similar to swine flue; dog flue, human flue, according to Chitate has either dented or totally destroyed some indigenous producers’ businesses.

According to World Health Organisation the avian influenza outbreak was reported at a goose farm in Spain with 705 birds dying as a result. In addition 782 were cowed and disposed off to stop the spread.

Although there are no reported cases of avian influenza in Zimbabwe poultry producers targeting the international market have been left stranded with most countries putting up stringent restrictions on the importation of bird products.

So what could happen if ever this flue reaches our shores?

“You use Respi Mint.” Said Bulawayo Seed-co Regional Sales and Marketing Agronomist Tony Moyo.

“These mint-pine lozenges soften and soothe the throat in case of hoarseness and tired vocal cords” added Moyo.

Humans can also contract bird flue but this only occurs when there is contact with infected birds or surfaces contaminated with bird flu viruses.
