Plumtree – Tragedy has struck a community in Plumtree following reports that two young men from the area have died while fighting for Russian forces in the ongoing Ukraine war. The deaths add to a growing toll of Zimbabwean nationals lured into the conflict under false pretenses.
According to sources, the two men were part of a larger cohort of Zimbabweans and other African nationals recruited to join the Russian military effort. Details surrounding the circumstances of their deaths remain unclear, but the news has plunged their families and the local community into mourning.
The development comes amid mounting evidence of systematic recruitment networks operating across southern Africa. An investigative report titled “The Business of Despair,” released in February 2026 by the French open-source intelligence project All Eyes on Wagner (AEOW), revealed that at least 1,417 African nationals have been recruited to fight for Russia since 2023 .
Of those, 316 have been confirmed killed in action, with the average duration of service before death standing at just six months . The database lists six Zimbabwean nationals, one of whom, Chivise Bryan-Bright, has previously been confirmed dead .
Investigative journalist Ezra Tshisa Sibanda has been vocal about the plight of Zimbabwean recruits. In a letter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs dated 10 March 2026, Sibanda detailed how young men were deceived by recruitment agents promising lucrative jobs in truck driving, security, and cleaning .
“They were told they would receive a once-off payment of US$37,000 and a monthly salary of US$4,000,” Sibanda stated .
Instead, upon arrival in Russia, their passports were confiscated, and they were sent to military barracks. After as little as two weeks of basic training, they were deployed to frontlines in Donetsk .
One Zimbabwean currently trapped in Russia pleaded for help, saying:
“We need help urgently to come back home. The way we went to come here was not what we were told. Our brothers are dying, others are injured… they are losing their limbs and want to return home” .
Recruitment Hub in Plumtree
Investigations have identified Plumtree as a key recruitment hub, with young men departing through Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport . Recruits are reportedly offered sign-on fees of around US$10,000 and monthly salaries of up to US$2,500, but many families have received far less . One father from Plumtree, who recently lost his son, told investigators he had visited the Russian embassy in Pretoria but was told repatriation “will take months to complete” .
Calls for Government Action
The growing crisis has drawn sharp criticism from civic leaders and activists. Zipra liberation war hero Mayibongwe Mkandla expressed deep concern:
“To see young men leaving because there are no jobs and ending up fighting someone else’s war is painful. War is not a contract you cancel when things go wrong. Once you are there, you are at the mercy of forces beyond you” .
Opposition Nationalist Alliance Party (NAP) leader Devine Mhambi Hove described the situation as a “profound tragedy for the Zimbabwean family” and urged the government to act .
“We call on the government to break its silence, issue immediate travel warnings, and work with international bodies to bring our children home,” Hove said .
Activist and academic Melusi Nyathi noted that neighbouring South Africa had successfully negotiated the release of its citizens, contrasting it with Zimbabwe’s perceived inaction .
“To make matters worse, our neighbours South Africa have taken a bold stance and called out Russia, leading to a number of victims being released,” Nyathi said .
Efforts to obtain comment from Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding investigations or potential rescue operations have so far been unsuccessful .
As the community in Plumtree mourns, the deaths of the two young men serve as a grim reminder of the human cost of a war thousands of kilometres from home—fought by young men who left in search of a better life.
