Legal Fallout Exposes Moyo as ‘Architect’ of Both Amendment Bill and Court Challenge

Zim GBC News | Crimes and Courts

In a dramatic turn of events that has sent shockwaves through Zimbabwe’s political and legal circles, a blistering public exchange has erupted following the withdrawal of a high-profile legal team from a Constitutional Court case.

The fallout has led to explosive allegations that former cabinet minister Professor Jonathan Moyo is the mastermind behind both a controversial government amendment and the legal bid to overturn it.

Advocate Method Ndlovu, of the Apex Legal Group of Advocates, on Thursday formally withdrew his services for clients Mbuso Fuzwayo and the Ibhetshu LikaZulu pressure group in their pending Constitutional Court application.

In a searing letter addressed to a Mr. Sithole, dated 5 March 2026, Adv Ndlovu cited a “fundamental breakdown in trust” and made serious allegations regarding unpaid fees and a “choreographed” attack on his character.

Adv Ndlovu stated in the letter that his engagement came with significant professional risk, requiring “appropriate and timely commitments and undertakings” from the litigants, which he claims were assured by both Mr. Sithole and Professor Moyo, whom he identified as “the principal architect of the litigation.”

“It is therefore inconsistent and unacceptable that, after the grant of direct access, you now state that you are unable to pay me, particularly given my understanding that you have received payment in respect of the matter,” part of the letter reads.

The Advocate further detailed the breakdown, alleging a personal attack from Professor Moyo.

“Within the past week Professor Moyo advanced allegations against me that are without foundation. Those assertions have caused reputational harm and, in my view, foreshadowed the position you have now taken. The attack was choreographed,” Adv Ndlovu wrote.

“I cannot continue to serve in circumstances in which I am treated as expendable or as an instrument of convenience.”

The lawyer concluded his withdrawal by expressing deep suspicion regarding his former clients’ motives.

“I am not sure what you and Professor Moyo are up to particularly in view of the extent to which you have so far gone.”

Mawarire’s Scathing Public Response

The lawyer’s letter was quickly followed by a fierce public rebuke from prominent political activist and lawyer, Mr. Jealousy Mawarire.

In a statement shared on social media, Mr. Mawarire directly addressed Professor Moyo, accusing him of duplicitous conduct and financial impropriety.

“You have been apoplectic, ranting, jumping and diving trying to deny that you conceived, coordinated and executed the Mbuso Fuzwayo and Ibetshu constitutional court application to oppose your constitutional amendment bill 3,” Mr. Mawarire’s statement read.

He alleged that the former minister had collected funds for the legal work but failed to disburse them as agreed.

“You collected Tagwirei and Ziyambi Ziyambi’s money and failed to pay the lawyer that you used. Thanks to your greed, the truth is out. You are the architect of both the constitutional amendment bill 3 and the court application to challenge it.”

Mr. Mawarire’s statement concludes with a damning assessment of the alleged strategy:

“Anyway, there is no honor among sellouts. We have never seen such treacherous behaviour in the history of Zimbabwe. What a sellout!”

As of the time of publication, Professor Jonathan Moyo has not issued a public response to the allegations made by Adv Ndlovu or Mr. Mawarire.

The claims have ignited a political storm online, with many questioning the integrity of the legal challenge and the motivations behind the Constitutional Amendment Bill.
