BULAWAYO – In a daring broad-daylight armed robbery, a gang of unknown assailants made off with a staggering US$78,141 and ZAR 501,820 after terrorizing an employee at a financial services outlet in the heart of Bulawayo on Wednesday morning.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched a manhunt for the suspects, who struck at approximately 7:08 AM along the bustling Jason Moyo Street, between 8th and 9th Avenues.
According to preliminary police reports, the victim, a female employee, was confronted by the suspects as she was parking her vehicle upon arriving for work.
“The suspects forcibly escorted her into the offices and ordered her to open the strong room and a Chubb safe,” read a statement from Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the Chief Staff Officer (Press and Public Relations) to the Commissioner-General of Police.
The gang acted with chilling precision, scooping cash from the safe before ensuring their escape would not be easily traced.
“Subsequently, the suspects took cash from the safe, removed a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) and a panic button, before escaping through the back door,” Commissioner Nyathi confirmed.
The removal of the DVR suggests an attempt to destroy forensic evidence, while disabling the panic button highlights the suspects’ familiarity with security protocols.
Authorities are treating the case with the utmost urgency given the high-profile nature of the crime and the significant amount of money stolen.
The ZRP has appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is appealing for information which may assist in the on-going investigations to contact the National Complaints Desk on (0242)703631 or WhatsApp 0712800197, or report at any nearest police station,” Commissioner Nyathi added.
