HARARE — As the global community marked World Engineering Day on 4 March 2026, Zimbabwean engineers have been challenged to take a leading role in advancing the country’s National Development Strategy 2 (NDS 2) and its aspiration of becoming an empowered upper middle-income economy by 2030.
In an address to engineers and engineering professionals across the country and those practicing abroad, Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers (ZIE) President Professor Eng. William Msekiwa Goriwondo celebrated the profession’s contribution to national development while calling for greater innovation, integrity, and compliance with regulatory standards.

“Engineering is more than a profession; it is a calling to solve problems, to design solutions, and to improve the quality of life for our communities,” Prof. Goriwondo said.
“From infrastructure development to renewable energy, from water systems to digital technologies, engineers remain at the forefront of building Zimbabwe’s future. Our work touches every sector of society, and it is through our dedication that progress becomes possible.”
Smart Engineering for Sustainable Future
This year’s World Engineering Day theme, “Smart Engineering for a Sustainable Future through Innovation and Digitalization,” resonates strongly with Zimbabwe’s development priorities, according to the ZIE president.
Prof. Goriwondo emphasized that engineers in Zimbabwe have a pivotal role to play in modernizing systems and enhancing the economy in line with the country’s Vision 2030.
“Our expertise is essential in modernizing systems and enhancing the economy, in line with the country’s aspiration of becoming an empowered upper middle-income economy by 2030,” he stated.
Zimbabwe Shines at Global Hackathon
In a significant milestone for the local engineering community, the ZIE organized its first National Hackathon competition in 2026, sponsoring the winning team to represent Zimbabwe at the joint UNESCO-World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) World Engineering Day Hackathon in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The ZIE president congratulated the team from the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), which emerged victorious in the local competition and joined the Zimbabwe delegation to the global event in Jakarta.
“This hackathon brings together engineering students and young professionals from across the world to design practical solutions to real-world problems aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” Prof. Goriwondo explained.
Call for Registration and Compliance
Amid the celebrations, the ZIE president issued a firm reminder to engineering professionals regarding their statutory obligations.
“May this message be a reminder to all those engineers who are not registered yet, to regularize and comply with the Engineering Council of Zimbabwe (ECZ) Act, for it is an offense to practice without a valid practicing license from the ECZ,” he warned.
Prof. Goriwondo urged the profession to unite in upholding the highest standards of integrity, responsibility, and service.
“World Engineering Day is more than a celebration; it is a pledge. A pledge to harness knowledge for good, to innovate with purpose, and to leave a legacy of progress that future generations will be proud to inherit.”
Inspiring the Next Generation
The ZIE president encouraged engineers to inspire young people to pursue careers in engineering, emphasizing the profession’s critical role in solving society’s most pressing challenges.
“Let us inspire the next generation of engineering professionals to dream boldly and act decisively. Let us continue to work together—across borders, disciplines, and cultures—to engineer solutions that uplift humanity,” he said.
“Happy World Engineering Day to all. May our collective efforts continue to illuminate the path towards a sustainable and prosperous tomorrow.”
