ZRP Denies Involvement in Attack on Professor Madhuku

Zim GBC News | Political Correspondent

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a statement denying any involvement in an alleged attack on National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) convener, Professor Lovemore Madhuku, and members of his team.

In a press statement released on Sunday, the police said they had noted reports of the incident but clarified that they played no role in it.

This response creates a direct contradiction with Professor Madhuku’s account of events, in which he claims that police officers were present during the attack.

According to the ZRP’s version of events, the incident stems from a notification for a meeting that was found to be procedurally flawed.

“In actual fact, Professor Lovemore Madhuku and his team had previously notified the relevant regulating authority regarding their intended meeting,” read the statement signed by Commissioner P. Nyathi, the Chief Staff Officer (Press and Public Relations) to the Commissioner General of Police.

“Upon reviewing the notification, the regulating authority identified certain irregularities and engaged the National Constitutional Assembly convener and advised him that the meeting was not sanctioned,” the statement continued.

The police force emphasised that due to the meeting not being sanctioned, they had no presence at the location.

“As such, no police personnel were deployed to oversee or monitor the meeting in question,” Commissioner Nyathi stated.

Despite denying involvement, the ZRP expressed a desire to get to the bottom of the matter.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is keen to know what actually transpired on the alleged attack on Professor Lovemore Madhuku and his team.”

This assertion directly contradicts Professor Madhuku’s earlier claims, in which he implicated the police. The NCA leader has maintained that law enforcement agents were present and did nothing to stop the alleged assault.

The conflicting reports have created confusion, and it remains unclear which version of events will be investigated by the authorities.
