Zimbabwe international Tawanda Maswanhise continued his remarkable season by scoring twice to lead Motherwell to a commanding 2-0 victory over Dundee United at Fir Park on Saturday, moving his side to within one point of third-placed Celtic.
The in-form Warriors forward opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 37th minute after a VAR review penalised Vicko Sevelj for a reckless challenge. Maswanhise coolly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to give the hosts the lead.
He then doubled the advantage just one minute into the second half, reacting quickest to a deep free-kick before seeing his effort take a deflection and nestle into the near corner .
The brace takes Maswanhise’s league tally to 16 goals for the season, moving him two clear of Celtic’s Benjamin Nygren at the top of the Scottish Premiership scoring charts .
Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou hailed his star striker’s impact while emphasising the collective effort behind the team’s success.
“Tawanda has been a key player for us, and he is giving us good goals this season but obviously it’s not him only but a lot more players also in the team,” Askou told the club’s media .
“We are happy with the clean sheet we kept and of course two goals that came from Tawanda. For us it was an important win and we keep on pushing” .
The victory extends Motherwell’s unbeaten run to 11 matches, with the Steelmen now sitting fourth on the log with 53 points—a new record in the club’s history . They remain 10 points behind leaders Heart of Midlothian but hold a game in hand.
Dundee United, meanwhile, slipped to a third consecutive game without victory and remain seventh, now 12 points adrift of sixth place.
Maswanhise, who joined Motherwell after being released by Leicester City, has previously spoken of his ambition to play Champions League football .
With his current form, the 24-year-old appears well on his way to achieving that dream.
