Nine Kombi Drivers Arrested After CCTV Captures Reckless Driving in Harare CBD

HARARE – Nine commuter omnibus drivers and conductors are in police custody following a targeted crackdown on reckless driving in Harare’s Central Business District, after they were captured on CCTV cameras mounting pavements and endangering pedestrians.

The suspects—Innocent Vera (31), Archford Dhlamini (34), Justice Mukucha (23), Isaac Danzvara (30), Moses Mandimutsira (17), Ashley Kandonga (30), Trymore Nyakabau (29), Liberty Kudzange (34), and Leo Zuze (34)—were arrested on Friday following an intensified police operation aimed at taming the City’s notoriously chaotic public transport system.

Authorities confirmed that the group was filmed deliberately driving onto pavements in an attempt to evade police patrols, a maneuver that placed members of the public at serious risk of injury or death.

In one harrowing incident near an embassy office along Speke Avenue, clients were forced to scramble for cover as a commuter omnibus sped past at close range.

Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the arrests and outlined the strategy behind the operation.

“We have deployed police officers on every street to tackle this menace,” Inspector Chakanza said.

“The drivers were captured on various CCTV cameras, which led to their identification and subsequent arrest.”

He emphasized that law enforcement is maintaining a zero-tolerance approach to reckless driving, warning that authorities will continue to target operators whose actions endanger public safety.

The nine suspects are currently detained at Harare Central Police Station and are facing charges of reckless driving and endangering public safety. They are expected to appear in court soon.

The arrests mark the latest effort by authorities to restore order in the CBD, where kombi drivers have long been accused of flouting traffic regulations with impunity, often prioritizing fare collection over the safety of pedestrians and passengers alike.
