Zimbabwe’s preparations for the upcoming Four Nations Cup in Botswana have suffered a major setback, with exciting attacker Tawanda Chirewa ruled out due to injury, Zim GBC News can confirm.
The Warriors are already without defender Brendan Galloway, who was sidelined for six weeks following a hernia procedure. Now, head coach Marian Marinica must contend with the absence of Chirewa, who picked up a knock at his English League One side Barnsley that will require up to four weeks to fully recover.
The timing could not be worse. The Four Nations Cup is scheduled for March 23-31 at the Obed Itani Chilume Stadium in Francistown, where Zimbabwe is set to face regional rivals Zambia, Malawi, and hosts Botswana.
Chirewa, who has been establishing himself as a key figure in the national team setup, was expected to be one of the pillars of Marinica’s squad for the tournament. His creativity and attacking flair were seen as crucial weapons as the Warriors look to test themselves against strong regional opposition.
The injury forces Marinica back to the drawing board, with the technical team now expected to accelerate plans to integrate younger players into the squad.
Sources close to the camp indicate that while the loss of Chirewa is disappointing, the coaching staff remains committed to using the tournament as a platform to build depth and expose emerging talent. The Four Nations Cup presents a valuable opportunity to assess players ahead of future competitive fixtures.
Galloway’s absence had already deprived the Warriors of defensive solidity, and Chirewa’s withdrawal further depletes the attacking options available to the coaching staff.
The Warriors are scheduled to assemble in camp within the coming weeks as preparations intensify for the regional tournament.
