In a powerful fusion of sports and social awareness, the Bulawayo Community Action Group (BURA) is set to host the “Ward 7 Valentine Challenge,” a youth soccer tournament aimed at combating drug and substance abuse.
The event, themed “The Valentine for Love, Drug Abuse & Substance is not for Love, Say NO to Drugs and say YES to Love,” will take place on 14 February 2026 at the Sizinda Hall Grounds from 8:00 AM to 16:00 hrs.
Organised under the Demand Reduction pillar of community intervention, the tournament targets under-13 footballers from the Sizinda and Makokoba communities. Competing teams include Zobha FC and Zebra FC from Sizinda, alongside Fusini FC and Real Stars FC from Makokoba.
More than a competition, the event is a proactive platform to engage the youth, promote healthy lifestyles, and reinforce positive community values.
Mr. Sevina Ncube, Chief Coordinator of the Bulawayo Community Action Group, emphasised the initiative’s dual purpose.
“This is not just about football. It’s about protecting our new generation. We are using sports to draw our young people away from the dangers of drug and substance abuse while celebrating love in its truest form care for one another and for our community,” he stated.
The day will also feature awareness campaigns on crime prevention and bullying, integrating educational messages into the sporting festivities. By leveraging the universal appeal of football, organisers hope to foster dialogue, mentorship, and resilience among children and attendees.
As Valentine’s Day approaches, the Sizinda event stands out as a testament to community-led action—where love is redefined as collective responsibility, and where every pass and goal symbolises a step toward a healthier, drug-free future for Bulawayo’s youth.
