A devastating sequence of events has rocked Masimba Holdings after two employees died in tragic circumstances within seven days.

According to the Masvingo Mirror, worker Willington Dube was killed inside a concrete mixer on Monday after the truck operator, 37-year-old Emmanuel Tachiona Chihanga, allegedly switched the machine on while Dube was still inside cleaning it.

On Saturday morning, Chihanga died by suicide. He reportedly left a note stating he was under immense pressure and felt blamed for his colleague’s death.

Govt Warns Schools Against Forcing Parents to Buy Uniforms

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has reiterated that public schools cannot compel parents to purchase uniforms from the school, as this infringes on their right to choose freely.

Speaking at a meeting in Bulawayo, the ministry’s Director of Communications and Advocacy, Taungana Ndoro, urged parents with grievances to report them to district offices.

“Schools are not allowed to make uniform purchases a condition for enrolment,” Ndoro said, describing such practices as illegal. He cited Thekwane High School as a case currently under investigation.

ConCourt Grants Activists Direct Access in 2030 Term Challenge

The Constitutional Court on Monday granted political activist Mbuso Fuzwayo and Matabeleland pressure group Ibhetshu LikaZulu direct access to challenge President Mnangagwa’s proposed 2030 political agenda.

NewsHawks reported that the challenge targets ZANU-PF’s Resolution 1 of 2024, which seeks to extend Mnangagwa’s term from 2028 to 2030.

Cabinet Approves Draft Constitutional Amendments Extending Presidential Term

Zimbabwe’s Cabinet has approved draft legislation for significant constitutional amendments, including extending presidential terms from five to seven years and introducing an indirect system of electing the Head of State via Parliament.

If passed, the changes would allow President Emmerson Mnangagwa, 83, to remain in office until 2030. Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi announced that the Bill will be sent to the Speaker of Parliament for publication and debate, ZimLive reported.

In a landmark ruling, the High Court ordered Alliance Insurance Company to rebuild a factory destroyed by fire, enforcing a US$24 million policy.

The Herald reported that Justice Takuva affirmed the insured’s right to demand specific performance when an insurer chooses reinstatement. Paramount Exports (Private) Limited’s factory, severely damaged in a fire on 4 December 2023, must be reconstructed within six months. Alliance Insurance had initially accepted liability but later attempted to withdraw, offering a cash settlement instead.

Magistrate Recuses Herself from Activist’s Bail Application

Harare provincial magistrate Ruth Moyo has recused herself from presiding over political activist Godfrey Karembera’s bail application following allegations of bias.

Karembera, popularly known as Madzibaba Veshanduko, applied for recusal, arguing that Moyo could not impartially determine his matter. The magistrate granted the application, and the case will now be heard before Magistrate Tapiwa Kuhudzai on 13 February. Karembera faces charges of incitement to commit public violence, The Herald reported.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa is set to grant a presidential pardon to some convicted inmates to decongest the nation’s prisons. According to the Daily News, the move aims to offer deserving offenders an opportunity for rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

High Court Rejects Bid to Throw Out US$24K Damages Lawsuit

The High Court has rejected applications by Delta Beverages and Old Mutual Insurance to dismiss a US$24,345 damages lawsuit, clearing the way for a full trial.

Nehanda Radio reported that Original Haulage is claiming delictual damages after one of its trucks was allegedly destroyed beyond repair in a head-on collision on 21 September 2018 at Mucheke Bridge. The truck collided with a Delta Beverages vehicle driven by Stanmore Masisimani, an employee of Delta at the time. Old Mutual is cited as the insurer.

In his ruling, Justice Rodgers Manyangadze found that Original Haulage had established a prima facie case sufficient for the court to continue hearing the dispute.
