COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – Blessing Muzarabani delivered a career-defining spell as Zimbabwe stunned cricket giants Australia with a commanding 23-run victory in the Men’s T20 World Cup at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, sending shockwaves through the tournament.
The towering seamer claimed a career-best 4-17 as the Chevrons successfully defended their total of 169-2, bowling Australia out for 146 in 19.3 overs in a dramatic Group B contest that will be remembered as one of Zimbabwe’s greatest cricketing moments.
Clinical Bowling Display
Australia’s chase never fully settled. They slumped to a precarious 29-4 before Matthew Renshaw and Glenn Maxwell attempted a rescue mission with a 77-run partnership for the fifth wicket. But when Renshaw was caught for 65 after skying Muzarabani with just eight balls remaining, Australia’s hopes were effectively extinguished.
Muzarabani’s figures of 4-17 represented a personal best on the international stage, while Brad Evans provided superb support with 3-23 as the Australian batting lineup crumbled under pressure.
Captain Raza Overcome with Pride
An emotional Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza dedicated the victory to the team’s unity and fighting spirit, describing the win as “unbelievable.”
“The culture, environment and unity we’ve created over a long time makes me extremely proud – and on top of that, to win is unbelievable,” Raza said after the match.
“It looked like the boys wanted [to win] and they really deserve it. We don’t need to change anything and it’s a great position, but it doesn’t guarantee anything. So the next game is now the most important one.”
Measured Batting Approach Pays Dividends
Earlier, Zimbabwe’s batting approach appeared measured rather than explosive after being asked to bat first. Opener Brian Bennett anchored the innings with an unbeaten 64 from 56 balls, striking seven fours at a strike rate of 114.28. While not rapid, his innings provided the structural foundation on a surface that demanded patience.
Tadiwanashe Marumani added a brisk 35 from 21 balls, and Ryan Burl contributed 35 from 30 deliveries, injecting momentum at key phases. Raza then provided a late flourish with an unbeaten 25 from 13 deliveries, striking Zimbabwe’s only six off the final ball of the innings to lift them to 169.
While some observers felt Zimbabwe had left runs on the pitch, Raza revealed the innings was part of a deliberate strategy.
“We discussed that we don’t want to go for 190. If we go for 190 now, we are 140 all out,” Raza explained.
“We’ve seen in Sri Lanka you can lose wickets if you go too hard too early. We sent a message to Brian Bennett that he’s doing a great job, not to panic, and we’ll get to a good score if he stays through.”
Australia’s Chase Unravels
Australia entered the match buoyed by a convincing 182-6 win over Ireland, but their aggressive start quickly unravelled against Zimbabwe’s disciplined bowling attack. Muzarabani and Evans removed Josh Inglis, Travis Head, Cameron Green and Tim David to leave the Australians reeling at 29-4.
Maxwell’s dismissal for 31 – dragging on to Burl – intensified the pressure. Only three Australian batters reached double figures, highlighting the dominance of Zimbabwe’s bowling unit.
Muzarabani returned for the penultimate over with Australia needing 34 from the final two overs. His removal of the dangerous Renshaw extinguished any realistic hopes of a late surge and completed a landmark performance that also saw him reach 100 T20 international wickets.
Fielding Excellence
Zimbabwe’s fielding proved equally decisive. Clive Madande and Tony Munyonga produced crucial boundary stops, reflecting a disciplined and composed display that belied their underdog status.
Historic Victory
This was only the second T20 World Cup meeting between the sides. Zimbabwe famously defeated an Australia team featuring Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist in 2007. The Chevrons now hold a perfect 2-0 record against Australia in the tournament’s history.
The victory leaves Group B finely balanced after two matches each, with Australia now trailing both Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka by two points. The Chevrons have positioned themselves strongly for progression to the knockout stages, with their next match now carrying enormous significance.
For a nation starved of cricketing glory in recent years, this triumph over one of the sport’s superpowers will be savoured as a moment of pure, unadulterated pride – a reminder that on their day, the Chevrons can compete with and conquer the very best.
