HARARE — A Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officer is hospitalized after being severely beaten by three men who discovered him with a married woman at a lodge in Budiriro on Tuesday.

Constable Blessing Mutoko (33), a member of the Victim Friendly Unit at Budiriro Police Station, was rushed to Sally Mugabe Hospital following the assault. He had been providing counselling to a couple involved in a domestic violence case before allegedly developing an inappropriate relationship with the wife.

The incident occurred at Dombo Lodge, near the police station, after the officer and the woman met privately. Upon leaving, they were confronted by her husband, Charles Jamba (66), and his relatives, Joseph Jamba (38) and Tinashe Magumve (21).

Sensing danger, Mutoko attempted to flee in a commuter omnibus but was forcibly removed by the trio and assaulted with fists, sustaining facial injuries including a cut nose and significant swelling.

A bystander intervened and alerted the police, leading to the arrest of the three assailants. The case has been officially logged under RRB 6698354.

An eyewitness at the scene criticized the officer’s conduct, stating,

“Mutoko was jeered at for his handling of the domestic violence case. Counselling requires professionalism, and this officer not only failed to demonstrate that but also misused the contact details of the counselee.”

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi was unavailable for comment at the time of reporting.
