VICTORIA FALLS — The body of an American tourist has been recovered from the Victoria Falls gorge, following a multi-day search and recovery operation by Zimbabwean and Zambian authorities.
The tourist, whose identity has not yet been officially released, is believed to have slipped and fallen into the 108-meter-deep chasm on Monday after crossing the Victoria Falls Bridge from Zimbabwe into Zambia. The alarm was raised on Tuesday by a local lodge after the guest failed to return.
A joint police team located the body lodged between rocks in the gorge late Tuesday, prompting a shift from a search and rescue to a recovery mission. On Wednesday, police divers, secured by ropes, conducted a hazardous descent to retrieve the remains.
“This was a highly complex and dangerous operation due to the terrain and powerful currents,” said a spokesperson for the Zambian police involved in the recovery.
“Our deepest condolences go to the family of the deceased.”
The management of the lodge that reported the tourist missing expressed profound sadness.
“We are devastated by this tragic incident and are providing full support to the authorities and the tourist’s family during this incredibly difficult time,” a representative stated.
Zambian police later confirmed the recovered body was that of the missing American. Investigations into the exact circumstances of the death are ongoing.
