Tshabangu Set to Receive ZWG$56 Million in State Political Funds

Harare – Sengezo Tshabangu, the self-declared secretary general of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), is poised to receive ZWG$56 million in state funding under the Political Finance Act (PFA), a development likely to intensify controversy around his political role.

The allocation follows the formula set out in the 2004 legislation, which mandates that political parties securing at least 5% of the vote in a general election receive public funds proportional to their share of the parliamentary seats. The primary goal of the Act is to “promote transparency, accountability, and fairness in the political process.”

With ZANU-PF allocated the lion’s share of ZWG$106 million after winning 176 seats, the CCC faction associated with Tshabangu qualifies for its portion after the party garnered 103 seats in the last election.

The news emerges as Tshabangu publicly called for opposition unity in a New Year’s message.

“As we enter a new chapter, I wish to remind my fellow opposition politicians that unity of purpose is the remedy that can cure many political problems,” he wrote on his X account.

“We need to set our differences aside and move forward in unison.”

However, the controversial figure continues to face significant public backlash, with many critics and citizens accusing him of being a proxy for the ruling party, undermining the opposition from within.

The Political Finance Act strictly prohibits parties from accepting foreign donations, making state funding a critical financial resource.

The disbursement is expected to fuel further debate about political representation and the legitimacy of factional claims within the country’s opposition landscape.
