A group of determined former students from Nguwanyana Primary School in Mangwe District has taken matters into their own hands to uplift their former school by renovating classroom infrastructure, with a special focus on flooring.

The initiative has brought together old students of various ages and professional backgrounds. Despite their different life paths, they are united by a shared commitment to improving the learning environment for current and future generations.

“We looked at the state of Nguwanyana Primary School and asked ourselves how best we could assist in making it more attractive,” said Jechoniah Mdluli.

“That’s when we formed a volunteer committee to renovate classroom floors by tiling them.”

The first classroom was successfully tiled during the second school term of 2025. With support from the school head and the local community, the team is now working on the second classroom as part of Phase Two of the project.

Their goal is to tile all classroom floors, creating cleaner, safer, and more motivating spaces for both learners and teachers. As part of their plan, they also aim to supply each completed classroom with mops and brooms for maintenance.

“This effort will lure children to school and provide a healthy environment for both learners and teachers,” Mdluli added.

The project has already begun to inspire wider support from the surrounding community, with more members contributing funds and resources to keep the initiative alive.

In a time where many rural schools face declining infrastructure and limited resources, the efforts by the Nguwanyana alumni stand as a shining example of what grassroots action and community pride can achieve.
