Bulawayo – A fatal road accident occurred adjacent to the Mpopoma Post Office on Tuesday, shortly after the traffic lights at the junction of Nketa Drive and Hide Park Road.
The collision claimed one life, with multiple others seriously injured.
According to eyewitnesses, a Netone-branded double-cab vehicle travelling from the direction of Bulawayo City Centre hit a pothole, veered into the oncoming lane, and collided head-on with a white Toyota Almera coming from the White City Stadium stadium direction.
The impact was described as severe, causing both vehicles to spin violently. The Toyota Almera was forced to face the direction it had come from, while the Netone vehicle also rotated, ending up facing the city centre but in the lane from White City stadium.
One male witness, who declined to be named, narrated the events to Zim GBC News:
“Imota ye Netone ibivela etown igijima yatshaya ipothole ililaphana yaphapha yeqa umbundu yazotshayana headon lemota leyi emhlophe ekade ivelela ngase WhiteCity.” (“The Netone vehicle was coming from town at speed. It hit a pothole there, jumped over the island, and then had a head-on collision with this white car that was coming from White City.”)
A woman who assisted in removing the injured provided further detail
“Ngizwe inkalakatha yomsimdo saphuma sigijima imota besezitshayene kudala. Kulomuntu okade ekhala esemoteni emhlophe bekungu driver nguye esiqale ukumkhipha. Ngibone igazi elinengi esandleni sakhe nganzanzelela lokuthi uqamuke lonyawo. Igazi ekade lisebusweni amgazi kumbe ebelimela noma ebesezibamba ngesandla esilimeleyo. Bekulomuntu omdala ku passenger’s side ebesengathi kazisathathi.”
(“I heard a huge crash, we ran out, and the cars had already collided. There was a person crying in the white car, the driver, whom we removed first. I saw a lot of blood on his hand, and I realised his foot was severed. There was blood on his face, maybe it was flowing or he was touching his face with his injured hand. There was an elderly person on the passenger’s side who appeared unresponsive.”)
She added that upon opening a rear passenger door, they found a male passenger who seemed to have struck his head against the driver’s seat headrest.
Zim GBC News reporters on scene witnessed the City of Bulawayo Fire Brigade extricating the body of the deceased from the Toyota Almera. The seriously injured driver of the Netone vehicle had already been transported to hospital by Bulawayo City ambulances. The driver of the Almera was being placed onto a stretcher, receiving first aid while breathing in laboured gasps.
The swift response of the City’s fire and ambulance services has been commended. However, the incident has sharply refocused attention on the state of Bulawayo’s roads, with several witnesses directly citing the pothole as the cause of the tragedy.
A life has been lost on the very first day of the year, raising urgent concerns about infrastructure maintenance in the city.
