TJ Sibs: From Beatboxing in Bulawayo to Building a Creative Empire

By Ashley Dean Misho | Arts and Entertainment Reporter

Bulawayo – TJ Sibs is a Zimbabwean artist who is becoming a big name in music and fashion.

Born Thembinkosi Junior Sibanda, he uses the name TJ Sibs to remember his roots and his journey to success.

His love for music started early in Bulawayo. As a child, he wrote poems and beatboxed with friends. He first realized music could be a real career after a funny incident: a friend organized a show for his group without telling them and made money from it.

“We didn’t know she was making money off us,” TJ laughs.

He worked hard, teaming up with a producer to make his first song. His big break came with an album called “New Era,” which got him featured in the Local News paper.

The album had storytelling hits like “Always” and “Closure.”

But his path wasn’t easy. In Bulawayo, local hip-hop artists didn’t get much support.

“People loved international hip-hop, but not so much from local artists,” he explains.

Fans would often just share his music online instead of buying it, which was discouraging.

However, one special moment kept him going:

“For my grandmother to buy my album really motivated me to push hard.”

To take full control of his sound, TJ Sibs learned music production himself.

This led to more hits like “Don’t Force” and “Ghetto Life.” He draws inspiration from stars like Chris Brown and Zimbabwe’s own Bling 4.

Music isn’t his only talent. TJ Sibs is also a smart businessman. He runs a fashion line called TJ Creative Eye, which is growing popular in Zimbabwe’s fashion world.

“In Bulawayo, you have be smart. Whenever I see an opportunity, I invest,” he says.

You can listen to his music on Audiomack and SoundCloud, and follow his journey on Facebook and Instagram.

With crowds demanding more at every show, TJ Sibs is on a mission to put Zimbabwean music and fashion on the global map one song and one outfit at a time.
