Zimbabwe’s national football team, the Warriors, have long danced on the edge of glory, but victory has always slipped through their fingers.
Despite flashes of brilliance, the team has never lifted the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy and has never qualified for a FIFA World Cup, leaving fans to wonder: will Zimbabwe ever taste true triumph?
The Warriors’ AFCON saga began in 2004 in Tunisia under Sunday Chidzambwa, finishing 4th in Group D with just one win and two losses.
In 2006, Charles Mhlauri’s squad achieved a historic first-ever AFCON win against Ghana (2–1) in Egypt—but still went home bottom of Group D due to goal difference.
Zimbabwe’s 2009 African Nations Championship (CHAN) campaign, a showcase for domestic league talent, offered no victories. Drawn with Ghana, DR Congo, and Libya, the Warriors drew all three matches and finished last in the group, highlighting the urgent need for stronger domestic development.
After an 11-year AFCON hiatus, the Warriors returned in 2017 under Callisto Pasuwa in Gabon. Placed in Group B, Zimbabwe earned just one point, though their 2–2 draw with Algeria hinted at untapped potential. Two years later in Egypt, Sunday Chidzambwa’s team again finished last in Group A, drawing once and suffering two defeats.
The 2021 AFCON in Cameroon brought a lone win against Guinea under Norman Mapeza, yet heartbreaks against Senegal and Malawi kept dreams at bay.
Most recently, in Morocco 2025 under Marian “Mario” Marinica, Zimbabwe finished 4th in Group B, scoring four goals but conceding six, another reminder of the fine margins between hope and heartbreak.
Across AFCON and CHAN campaigns, Zimbabwe has shown flashes of talent, grit, and determination, yet the curse of group-stage exits persists.
With no AFCON titles and no World Cup appearances, the question still haunts fans: can the Warriors rise from heartbreak to glory, claiming continental triumph and finally stepping onto the world stage?
