British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua was involved in a serious car crash in Nigeria on Monday, December 29, which resulted in two fatalities and left the athlete with minor injuries.
The collision occurred on the Ogun–Lagos state expressway, in a region where Joshua has family roots.
According to the Ogun State Police Command, Joshua was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that struck a stationary truck.
He was among four occupants in the vehicle, with his security detail following in a separate car.
Police confirmed that two people died in the accident. Joshua and other injured individuals were transported to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.
Eyewitness Adeniyi Orojo told The Punch that bystanders and officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps quickly responded to the scene.
Photos and videos circulating online showed a topless Joshua appearing dazed and in pain at the crash site, while other footage depicted the tragic aftermath with two bodies on the road.
The incident comes just over a week after Joshua’s high-profile boxing victory over Jake Paul in Miami, a match streamed live on Netflix.
Authorities have not indicated the cause of the crash, and Joshua’s condition is described as stable.
This report is based on information from the Ogun State Police Command, BBC News, The Telegraph, and eyewitness accounts published in The Punch.
