MAPUTO – Mozambique’s parliament has decisively rejected a proposal to change the country’s national flag, preserving the only state emblem in the world that features a modern assault rifle.
The proposed amendment sought to remove the iconic image of an AK-47 with a fixed bayonet, which has been a central part of the flag since independence in 1983. The symbol commemorates the nation’s protracted and bloody armed struggle for liberation from Portuguese colonial rule.
Opposition leader Venâncio Mondlane spearheaded the push for a new design, arguing that the firearm was incompatible with a modern, peaceful nation.
“A rifle represents violence, not peace,” Mondlane stated during the parliamentary debate.
“It is time for our symbols to reflect the future we are building, not just the battles of the past.”
However, a majority of legislators upheld the historical significance of the current flag. This marks the second time such a change has been rejected, following a similar failed attempt in 2005.
“The AK-47 is more than a weapon; it is a memory of struggle, a symbol of the independence and sovereignty that was wrested at a great cost,” said ruling party MP Ana Joaquina, encapsulating the sentiment of those who voted against the change.
“To remove it is to erase a fundamental chapter of our national identity.”
The debate has sparked broader conversations across the nation and the African continent about how countries balance honouring liberation histories with projecting visions of unity and peace. For now, Mozambique has chosen to preserve a powerful, if contentious, reminder of its revolutionary past.
The decision ensures that the distinctive green, black, yellow, and red flag, with its open book, hoe, and star superimposed on the rifle, will continue to fly unchanged.
