Each year on December 22, Zimbabweans commemorate National Unity Day, a significant event that marks the historic signing of the Unity Accord in 1987.
This momentous agreement, forged between the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) and the Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU), was a pivotal turning point for the nation.
The Accord, signed by then-President Robert Gabriel Mugabe and the late Dr. Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo, aimed to mend the rift between the two major political parties following years of conflict and strife.
The need for unity arose in the wake of a violent period in Zimbabwe’s history, during which approximately 20,000 people were killed during the conflict between ZANU and ZAPU, particularly in the Matabeleland region.
This brutal chapter underscored the necessity for reconciliation and collaborative governance.
As we reflect on this year’s observance of National Unity Day, the importance of peace, unity, and nation-building resonates deeply within the hearts of many Zimbabweans.
In the bustling streets of Bulawayo, citizens contemplate the significance of the day.
An anonymous resident noted, “National Unity Day is a reminder of what we can achieve when we come together. I believe we still have a long way to go, but this day symbolizes hope for many of us.”
Another local expressed, “While the Unity Accord was a step in the right direction, we must not forget the lessons of our past. Unity must be more than just a day on the calendar; it needs to be a continuous effort by all Zimbabweans.”
A young student added,
“I’ve learned about the Unity Accord in school, and it inspires me. It’s important for our leaders to keep fostering a sense of togetherness, not just in words but in actions that affect our daily lives.”
On this day, President Emmerson Mnangagwa addressed the nation, emphasizing that under the Second Republic, there is no room for antagonistic and divisive differences. He stated, “Our national unity is sacred. This day must see us all recommit ourselves to guarding, preserving, and promoting this critical pillar of our nationhood.”
The President underscored that the Unity Accord remains a building block for peace, progress, and development, stating,
“This day remains forever etched in the rich history and heritage of our beloved motherland, Zimbabwe.”
He further noted that through unity and love, Zimbabwe continues to overcome various obstacles and stressed the importance of a collective commitment to preserving national unity.
Opposition leader Nelson Chamisa also shared thoughts on the occasion, highlighting, “Today, division runs deep in politics, business, families, and even the church. Hate and disunity do not build nations; they destroy them.”
Chamisa’s statement pointed out that for too long, Zimbabwe has allowed hatred and intolerance to define its societal fabric.
He called for a shift in focus from blame to meaningful collaboration, urging Zimbabweans to choose unity over division and responsibility over blame.
He pointed to the unresolved grievances like Gukurahundi and the widening social and economic inequalities as sources of division that need collective action to address.
The opposition leader concluded with a call to action to restore majority rule, forge a new national consensus, and pursue genuine political settlement, emphasizing that: “true unity requires not only understanding but concrete mechanisms to resolve disputes and foster national cohesion.”
National Unity Day serves as a reminder not only to honor the past but also to envision a future where cooperation and unity are prioritized in national discourse.
As Zimbabweans face contemporary challenges, the spirit of reconciliation promoted by the Unity Accord remains essential.
As the day progresses, citizens across the country will reflect on the significance of unity, recognizing that genuine progress stems from a shared commitment to respect and collaboration.
