New Hope for Families: Zimbabwe’s IVF Growth Makes Parenthood Dreams Possible

Tembani P. Thebe | ZIM GBC NEWS

Zimbabwe’s fertility care landscape is transforming as advanced reproductive technology becomes more accessible. A growing number of IVF clinics across the country are providing hopeful couples with high-quality treatment and renewed possibility.

“In vitro fertilization (IVF) is primarily used to address infertility stemming from male or female factors. Male factors include low sperm count, poor motility, abnormal morphology, or azoospermia. Female factors encompass tubal blockage, ovulatory disorders like PCOS, endometriosis, and fibroids, which hinder natural conception.”

According to gynaecologist and fertility specialist Dr. J. Moyo,
“technological advances such as pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT) are significantly enhancing IVF treatment protocols.”

The need for in vitro fertilization (IVF) is increasing as awareness of infertility grows. Globally, about one in six couples experience infertility and in Zimbabwe, more people are now turning to fertility specialists for solutions.

Zimbabwe’s expanding IVF services are also attracting international patients. Offering competitive costs and a commitment to quality, several clinics now serve couples from across the region.

For many from countries where treatment is expensive, Zimbabwe has become a realistic option.

Beyond medical treatment, the increase in IVF services is helping to break down the stigma surrounding infertility. Outreach programs are working to educate communities about fertility challenges and available support.

“The main reasons for seeking IVF are male factor infertility, such as low sperm count, poor motility, abnormal morphology, or azoospermia and female factors, including blocked tubes, PCOS, fibroids, or endometriosis. A key advance is pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT), which improves success rates. The primary challenge remains affordability, as high medication costs make IVF relatively expensive ,” Dr .J. Moyo explained.

As IVF Zimbabwe continues to develop, the hope is that more families will be created and that success stories will encourage others. While the path to parenthood can be difficult, growing resources and support are making it more achievable.

With every successful pregnancy, Zimbabwe moves forward, offering the most precious gift of all the chance to welcome a new life and build a family.
