The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), led by Douglas Mwonzora, is currently embroiled in significant internal conflict following the expulsion of prominent members Shakespeare Mukoyi and Albert Chidhakwa. This upheaval stems from a dramatic takeover of the party’s headquarters, Harvest House, by Mukoyi and his faction, throwing the party’s unity into disarray.
The recent expulsions, part of a broader purge affecting six members, underscore the intensifying battle for control within the MDC. Mukoyi, previously serving as the party’s secretary for defence, was stripped of his position by the MDC leadership amid accusations of treachery.
In a surprising turn of events, Mukoyi and his faction declared they had successfully ousted Mwonzora, alleging mismanagement as the primary rationale for their actions.
In a statement issued by the MDC, the party confirmed the removal of Mukoyi and his associates, including Gift Chimanikire, Solomon “Sox” Chikohwero, Rhino Mashaya, and Adrian Chifamba.
“Council ratified the immediate expulsion of these individuals in accordance with Clause 5.10(a) and (d) of the MDC Constitution,” the statement read.
“They are therefore barred from conducting any business or entering into any contract on behalf of the MDC.”
The MDC publicly condemned Mukoyi’s actions, accusing him of collaborating with rival political parties and the police to unlawfully seize Harvest House.
“The violent seizure of MRT House was unequivocally condemned,” the party stated.
“This group of rebels, led by Shakespeare Mukoyi, was aided by ZANU PF, CCC, and elements of the Zimbabwe Republic Police.”
Political analyst Dr. Tinashe Zengeya commented on the situation, stating,
“The divisions within the MDC are stark reminders of the challenges opposition parties face in Zimbabwe. This internal strife could severely hinder their efforts to pose a unified challenge to ZANU-PF.”
As this conflict unfolds, it raises pressing questions about the MDC’s ability to maintain cohesion and present a united front in Zimbabwe’s turbulent political landscape.
The leadership, under Douglas Mwonzora, must act decisively to restore order and confidence within its ranks if it hopes to regain the trust of its supporters.
“The expulsion of Mukoyi is not just about individual members but reflects deeper issues within the party,”
said political commentator Farai Mavhinga.
“The MDC needs to address these divisions urgently to remain a viable alternative in Zimbabwean politics.”
As the situation develops, observers will be watching to see how the MDC navigates this turbulent period and whether it can effectively reclaim Harvest House and its political authority.
