Apple is exploring a radical new idea for iPhone cameras, instead of building everything into one sealed device, they are working on a system that would let you attach dedicated camera modules.

This could mean transforming your phone into a powerful, customisable imaging tool without needing to buy a whole new phone.

The patent, called “Foldable Electronic Devices With Modular Components,” describes a slimmer main device that connects to separate add-ons for different uses.

One of the proposed modules is a dedicated photography unit with its own camera sensor, interchangeable lenses and physical controls giving a hands on, DSLR-like feel.

Other possible modules mentioned in the patent include:

· An Audio Module to boost sound for content creation.

· A tough Outdoor Module with extra battery and GPS for adventures.

· A Computing Module for added power and external display support, effectively turning the iPhone into a pocket-sized workstation.

A tech analyst noted that this approach could “finally free smartphone cameras from the limits of traditional designs.”

Instead of replacing your entire phone for a better camera, you might just upgrade much like changing lenses on a professional camera.

While still only a patent, Apple’s exploration into modular design hints at a future where iPhones could become flexible, high performance platforms for creativity. If developed, this system would blur the lines between smartphone and professional camera making advanced photography more accessible to everyone.

Apple’s journey toward modular technology is one to watch, as it may redefine not just mobile photography, but how we think about upgrading our gadgets altogether.
