DOHA – In a moment of national pride on the global stage, Zimbabwean investigative journalist Tatenda Chitagu has been honoured with the media category award at the International Anti-Corruption Awards ceremony in Doha, Qatar. The award was presented last night, with celebrated Zimbabwean journalist Hopewell Chin’ono in attendance.
Chin’ono, who won the same accolade in 2022, reported the victory from the ceremony. He expressed profound pride in his compatriot’s achievement, highlighting its significance for Zimbabwe.
“I am very proud to see one of our compatriots honoured for his journalism work exposing corruption,” Chin’ono stated.
“Corruption costs Zimbabwe more than US$2 billion every year, and it has led to the near total collapse of public services, from healthcare to water provision and social protection.”
The award recognizes Chitagu’s courageous and persistent reporting on graft and malfeasance, work that continues a vital legacy in Zimbabwean journalism. Chin’ono framed this victory as part of a continuum of fearless reporting.
“It is encouraging and inspiring to see young journalists continuing the important work started decades ago by journalists such as Dumisani Muleya, Geoff Nyarota, Andy Moyse, and many others who set the standard for courageous and ethical reporting,” Chin’ono added.
“Well done to Tatenda.”
Tatenda Chitagu’s work, often conducted under challenging circumstances, has brought to light critical issues affecting Zimbabweans, upholding the public’s right to know and holding power to account.
His international recognition underscores the global resonance and necessity of local investigative journalism in the fight against corruption.
The win has been met with celebration from media advocates and citizens alike, who see it as a validation of the crucial role a free press plays in national development and accountability.
