HARARE – President Emmerson Mnangagwa has officially opened the annual Chiefs Conference in Harare, reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting and capacitating traditional leaders as key partners in national development.
Addressing the assembly, the President commended the chiefs for their indispensable role in the implementation of government policies and programs, describing them as vital custodians of community welfare and cultural heritage.
He highlighted significant progress on strategic national projects, including the construction of the Gwayi-Shangani and Kunzvi dams, which are set to underpin new agricultural greenbelts and enhance water security.
On the mining sector, President Mnangagwa underscored the importance of sustainable and responsible extraction of resources. He issued a firm reminder to investors to operate within the bounds of Zimbabwe’s laws while respecting local traditions and customs.
The President urged the traditional leaders to actively guide and oversee development projects within their jurisdictions, ensuring alignment with community needs and national objectives. He referenced Section 282 of the Constitution, which mandates traditional leaders to promote and safeguard cultural values.

President Mnangagwa added, outlining ongoing efforts to upgrade national infrastructure.
Concluding his address, the President called for united action against pressing social ills. He emphasized the need for collective efforts to combat gender-based violence and the scourge of drug and substance abuse, which he stated continue to undermine the fabric of families and communities across Zimbabwe.
